ASK ME HOW I FED MY FAMILY OF 5 – FRESH

No space, no time but want to eat fresh – a kitchen garden is for you! Kerry fed her family all summer long with a 4×6’ garden and containers. She planted 1 Big Mamma Tomato, 1 Campbell Tomato, 1 Big Bertha Tomato, 1 Sweet Banana Pepper, 1 Bush Crop Tomato (in a tomato cage), 2 rows of beans, 1 Zucchini, and 2 Basil in the 4×6” (YES THAT’S A LOT OF PLANTS). In containers, she planted in a 20” pot 1 Superbush Tomato with leaf lettuce around the base, 12” pot – 1 Red Robin Tomato, in hanging baskets on a shephard hook, and a pea plant. In a window box, she planted leaf lettuce that was placed on her patio. For space saving, she used tomato cages on all of the tomatoes. Harvesting is the key – Kerry picked from her garden until the end of September.

KEYS TO MAKE IT WORK:

  1. Jack’s 20-20-20 1x week, especially the containers
  2. Sprinkled Preen on the 4×6’ before planting
  3. 1 bale of straw after plants are established for a moisture barrier and weed control
  4. Water faithfully, containers every day
  5. Water 4×6’ every other day by just laying the hose in garden, soaking the soil, this is a great way to conserve water- you’re not watering the leaves
  6. Harvest every morning while drinking a cup of coffee before work
  7. 5 to 10 minute daily commitment
